This invisible problem continues its creeping expansion in Sooke. The quiet-but-pressing need for the food bank continues to grow in our community, mostly unheard and unseen.
On Thursday as usual, the Sooke Food Bank was open, handing out hampers. It was a slow day. With 24 volunteers on hand, they distributed about 230 hampers.
According to one of the long-contributing volunteers, there is a notable migration from former-Victoria residents. They partially contribute to the steady increased usage. While not exactly affordable for lower-income residents, Sooke still costs less than Victoria. And with the diminishing rentals units in Victoria, Sooke (as full as it already is) is now also bursting at the housing seams.
Their early morning bounty was ample. One of their main contributors of fresh food, Andy Carrier (of 2-for1 Pizza) last year provided 9,800 pounds of fresh fruit and vegetables. As Sooke Food Bank President Kim Metzger said to SPN, this is a donation that comes straight from the family’s own pocket. Straight from their hearts.
On Thursday morning, there was also 50 pounds of fresh food contributed by the Sunriver Community Garden, and another 50 pounds contributed from the newly-established Grace Gardens.
The need in Sooke continues to grow. Food Banks are not the answer, only a short-term remedy. And for many, it’s a necessary solution.
Please note that this increase in demand is in addition another new provider, a Faceboook group called Sooke Embrace has also been providing food boxes to families and individuals in need. These undocumented numbers are not counted.
The Sooke Food Bank (located at the Sooke Community Hall’s basement across from the murals, on the other side of the road of Mom’s Cafe) provides one hamper per month to those in need. The Food Bank is open on the first, second and third Thursdays of each month from 9:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Please bring your & your dependents’ Care Cards and proof of residence with you (i.e. utility bill, drivers license, etc.). For more information please leave a message at 250-642-7666 and someone will return your call. No one is turned away.
