There is an insidious situation brewing in the Sooke School District I would like to bring to the residents attention regarding school bus transportation and the district itself.
I think everyone knows that the Sooke schools are very full. In fact, we moved out of my daughters school catchment area of Saseenos Elementary and tried to switch schools to the one closest to home, which happens to be John Muir.
They refused us as, they are full, and she had to stay at Saseenos. Saseenos is a good school and we are not unhappy about her staying there.
What we are upset about is that the school transportation office is not obliged to provide busing to schools-out-of catchment areas.
Last spring as registration opened, I registered and paid-in-full the fees for both my children to ride the bus, to and from school, as both my husband and I work. The bill was $450.
It is now three working days to the beginning of school and they have not provided her transportation. She is not registered to ride any route. They did not tell us nor do they respond to my emails or phone calls. When I finally did talk to the manager, he stated they have no obligation to provide transportation as it is not her catchment school.
I explained the catchment school is full and not accepting registrants.
How on earth am i to provide an income for my family yet pick up my child from school every day. Its not possible. They won’t help. What do i do?
